Terminals and previews
Share terminals, run your app, and open the same running app as your team.
Terminals in a workspace run on the workspace machine, next to your files and agents. Start your app once and everyone in the workspace can open it.
Terminals
The terminal panel sits at the bottom of the right sidebar, under Files and the other tabs. Open it from its Terminal bar, or with ⌘ J or Ctrl ` , which also opens the sidebar if it's closed. You get a terminal for each worktree automatically, and it reattaches when you reload the page.
- New terminal:
Ctrl Shift `. - Split:
Ctrl Shift 5, or Open in split from a terminal's menu. - A terminal's menu also has Rename and Maximize panel.
- You can have up to 10 terminals open.
Terminals belong to a worktree. Switching worktrees shows that worktree's terminals; the others keep running.
Shared terminals
The terminal list shows Yours and Teammates. Open a teammate's terminal to watch it live: you see its earlier output, then everything new, marked Watching name's terminal · read-only.
- Only a terminal's owner can type in it, unless the owner turns on Let others type in its menu.
- A shared terminal keeps its owner's window size; others scroll if theirs is smaller.
- Viewers don't see terminals.
Close or end a terminal
Closing a terminal's pane never stops it. To stop a shell, choose Kill terminal; only the terminal's owner or the workspace owner can. If others are watching, CoDev asks first. Anyone else can choose Hide from my list.
Run your app
Start your dev server in a terminal, or ask an agent to:
npm run dev
Then open it in the Browser tab:
- Open the Browser tab in the side panel, or type
/preview 3000in the chat (use your app's port). - If it doesn't open on its own, choose your server from Dev servers. It lists every port with a server listening, like :3000.
The Browser tab has Reload preview, an address bar, Dev servers, and Expand preview. If no server is running, it says No dev server running.
Everyone opens the same app
Your teammates open the same port from their own Browser tab, so everyone uses the same running server, its data, and its logs in the shared terminal. When a teammate signs in or clicks around in the app, the requests show up in your terminal's server output.
Each person gets their own browser page: cookies, sign-ins, and storage in the preview aren't shared between people.
- Only owners and editors can open previews.
- A workspace can have up to 3 preview browsers open at once, one per person. A preview closes after 10 minutes without input.
- Downloads from the preview are blocked.
Depending on your workspace, previews are either streamed from a browser running on the workspace machine, or served from a separate preview domain with Open in new tab.
Keep your app running
Running processes stop when the workspace sleeps after 10 minutes without activity. When you come back, start the server again. Watching a preview doesn't count as activity on its own. See How workspaces run.
